Ever since the President Donald Trump has assumed office, he has proved to be beneficial and diligent friend for India. His recent tirade against Pakistan from the first day of the new year has come as music to Indian ears.
The latest exhortation by United States to Pakistan that the latter needs to step up its fight against terrorism is yet another proof that the former corporate tycoon means his business. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders has reiterated what President Trump has bluntly said that Islamabad has deceived the US by sheltering terrorists in return for 33 billion dollar aid.
“US know that Pakistan can do more to fight and stop terrorism and Washington wants Islamabad to step up and do that,” Sanders said. Ms Sanders said that President Trump is taking all these steps because Pakistan has failed to fulfill its obligations in the fight against terrorism.
A day before her, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said President Trump was prepared to stop all funding to Pakistan until it stops harboring terrorists. “Pakistan has played a double game for years,” Nikki Haley, Trump’s U.N. envoy, said Tuesday, explaining that Washington was withholding $255 million in aid to Islamabad. “They work with us at times and they also harbor the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan. That game is not acceptable.”
Just six months into his office, President Trump had outlined a new strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia August last year and at the time, he laid out and said that Pakistan was not fulfilling its obligations. “President Trump is simply following through on a commitment that he made, because this is a President who does what he says he’s going to do,” Sanders said. And that means a lot to Indians as India has suffered most because of this betrayal by Pakistan.
The United States and Pakistan enjoyed a cozy relationship for long, much to the chagrin of India. Thanks to the dubious Non-Alignment Movement policy adopted and led by India, Pakistan managed to embrace the US as it ally, mentor and patron. The US was one of the first nations to establish relations with the new Pakistani state established after the division of India.
Successive Presidents either overlooked Pakistani tomfoolery or took them lightly as they never bothered the ‘mainland’ on Pacific coast. All that changed when a handful of terrorists darted the hijacked planes in iconic edifices of US and the US realized what a monster it had reared in its backyard. A reluctant ally President George Bush’s War on Terror, Pakistan still managed to hoodwink the establishment in US. The freeloader Pakistani leadership (mainly military, to be precise) shared their ill-earned bounty from US coffers with Jehadi terrorists to ‘inflict thousand cuts on India’.
Unfortunately, hardly any US President understood the agony of a democratic nation like India. Whatever advantage India derived by friendship with US was negated by covert war-tactics by Pakistan.
To make matters worse, Trump’s predecessor Barak Obama was more concerned with appearing liberal and magnanimous than managing the affairs sternly. Else, a colossal empire like US, next only to Roman Empire in history, would never have made up with a country that harbored its archenemy like Osama Bin Laden.
Pakistan enjoyed a free ride on US alms almost ever since it came into existence. That free ride is about to end now. A businessman to the bones, Donald Trump, is now asking accounts and when Pakistan fails to furnish it, it will be forced to pay; and pay in a heavy manner. The word Pakistan means land of holy ones, but all the acts of Pakistan make it Papistan – a land of sinners. The time to redeem the sins has arrived. One just wants the Prez to step up the gas!
